This talk with David Pook aims to give the designer an understanding of the concepts of programming and what can be done with code. You won't come away with a working knowledge of PHP or JavaScript, that takes more than one evening, but you will have a much better understanding of what all those arcane symbols and words are about, what you can do with code and what to do next to develop your skills.

When: Monday 24th of November 2008. 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Where: The Werks

Register: pay online or on the day. Guide price £5 - £15

Why do some people seem to get all the interesting projects to work on, and be able to easily go from one project to the next?

Why are some people able to charge higher daily rates than others?

Julia Chanteray from The Joy of Business thinks that this is because these seemingly lucky people have been able to develop a great reputation in their area – they are desirable, hot property. She’ll be talking about how you can make yourself into hot property too, by developing your reputation for great work, and getting the word out about just how good you are. Julia will talk about how our work reputation is formed, why people think of us in certain ways, and what we can do to demonstrate reputation in the areas we want.

Julia has spent her life setting up and running different businesses and now helps other people to make money, do great work, and have fun while they’re doing it.

I came across the term bonsai people the other day and I believe it really relates to what we are trying to do at The Werks. Though I would personally replace 'poor' with 'forgotten', especially when relating it to our more 'civilised' world.

To me poor people are like bonsai trees. When you plant the best seed of the tallest tree in a flower-pot, you get a replica of the tallest tree, only inches tall. There is nothing wrong with the seed you planted, only the soil-base that is too inadequate. Poor people are bonsai people. There is nothing wrong in their seeds. Simply, society never gave them the base to grow on. All it needs to get the poor people out of poverty for us to create an enabling environment for them. Once the poor can unleash their energy and creativity, poverty will disappear very quickly. Prof Muhammad Yunus

Our aim is to support creatives, specifically individuals, freelancers and small businesses. It is clear that many creatives struggle to make a living doing what they would like to do. Of course there are many reasons for this, however I believe alot of it comes down to lack of support and community to allow themselves to grow.

Just like trees need the right environment to grow, so do people.

rosietag:thewerks.org.uk,2008-10-29:1712008-10-29T14:16:00Z2008-11-12T19:36:52ZThe Shiny Piggies that we love very much

At The Werks we have a big shiny piggy. Infact, it's not just one, but a family of three scattered across the building. Over the months these pigs have become a symbol of our ethos. Everytime someone comes to view our space the piggies are faithfully introduced.

The role of the shiny pig

Our vision with all the projects we are working on is to be a community of people who willingly and lovingly contribute in whichever way works best for them and us as a community. With this comes the natural trust we put into people to put something back. We don't want to monitor werkers nor get overloaded with admin werk. Yet, at the same time we are a business that needs to track all income and remain profitable at the same time.

The Piggy Guide

We work with guides, no strict rules, just open guidelines that we all werk towards. In relation to the piggy this means:

the piggy gets hungry

it needs to be fed for things like open coworking, tea/coffee contributions, printer/fax use and events

the piggy is allergic to copper coins and has a special soft spot for gold coins and notes

instead of hiring out space for events you can get attendees to contribute to the piggy to cover costs

sometimes special things happen at The Werks, occasionally it is worth rewarding the piggy for this

the piggy likes to receive messages too. Real messages, you know, those things written on paper

Additions to these guides?

I am keen to hear feedback on the shiny piggy guides. Perhaps I've missed something out or there are other ideas that we could implement.

Do let us know by commenting, dropping an email or having a chat.
